MOTU Instruments Soundbank

The MOTU Instruments soundank is a library of multi-sample instruments, loops, phrases, and synth instruments that comes packaed with your purchase of Digital Performer 11. Once you've registered DP 10, you'll be able to download the approximately 5.5 GB soundbank that includes acoustic and electronic drum kits, pianos, guitars, organs, orchestral instruments, synths, and pretty much anything else you might need to get your projects going. The soundbank can be hosted in any virtual instrument plugin that supports .UFS libraries such as MachFive3, UVI Falcon, or the free UVI Workstation (which we'll have more information about below).

Downloading the UVI Workstation

If you have MachFive3 or UVI Falcon, don't worry about these steps. If not, you should now download and install the UVI Workstation.

  1. Go to the UVI Workstation web page.
  2. Go to the Downloads tab and download the Mac or Windows installer and the PDF manual.
  3. Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.

Downloading the Soundbank

The MOTU Instruments soundbank file can be downloaded from your motu.com account page, once you've registered your copy of Digital Performer 11. You must already have an account - or create a new one - and register your copy of Digital Performer 11 to access the soundbank download link.

Note: If you purchased Digital Performer 11 (or later) as an upgrade from a previous version, your account registration is automatically updated with immediate access to the download link.

  1. Go to motu.com and log in to your account. If you don't yet have an account, create one.
  2. Go to My Registrations.
  3. If you haven't already done so, register your copy of Digital Performer. If you upgraded from a previous version of DP, it's already registered, and you're all set.
  4. Scroll to the Included virtual instruments, loops and sounds section in the list of your registered products and click the Free virtual instruments tab.
  5. Click the MOTU Instruments soundbank download link in the soundbank to begin the download.

Activating the Soundbank

The MOTU Instruments soundbank requires iLok activation. This requires that you create a free account at ilok.com, or use a previously created account.

If you already have an iLok account:

  1. Enter your iLok ID and the email associated with your iLok account in the boxes in the Included virtual instruments section of the DP 10 registration page.
  2. Launch the iLok License Manager application and log into your iLok account. If you don't have it, download it from ilok.com.
  3. Click the Available tab.
  4. In the list, drag and drop the MOTU Instruments soundbank activation to your computer or your iLok key as desired. For your convenience, there is a second activation, which you can use to activate a second computer or iLok

If you don't already have an iLok account:

  1. Visit ilok.com and create a free account.
  2. Download and install the iLok License Manager application.
  3. Enter your iLok ID and the email associated with your iLok account in the boxes in the Inlcuded virtual instruments section of the DP 10 registration page.
  4. Launch the iLok License Manager application and log into your iLok account. If you don't have it, download it from ilok.com.
  5. Click the Available tab.
  6. In the list, drag and drop the MOTU Instruments soundbank activation to your computer or your iLok key as desired. For your convenience, there is a second activation, which you can use to activate a second computer or iLok

The MOTU Instrument soundbank is now activated on your computer or iLok, and you are ready to begin using it, as explained in the following sections.


Extracting the Soundbank

The MOTU Instruments soundbank will download as a compressed .zip file, so you'll need to uncompress it before it will function with the UVI Workstation. On macOS, just double-click the file to start the extraction process. For a Windows system, right-click the .zip file, choose Extract All, select a location to store the unzipped file, then click Extract.

Where to store the soundbank

Once the file is extracted, you can place the MOTU Instruments.ufs file in whatever location you'd like. The UVI Workstation will automatically look for soundbanks in the following locations:

However, you can put the MOTU Instruments.ufs file anywhere you'd like, such as your computer's startup disk or an external hard drive for sample storage, and point UVI Workstation to look in that location. Please check the UVI Workstation manual or watch this short video for more information on this process.

The UVI Workstation window: When you load a MOTU Instruments soundbank preset in the UVI Workstation, you'll see something similar to the above picture, which shows the Edit tab for hte Twelve Strings guitar preset.

Browsing Presets: Click the Browser button or double-click the preset name to browse other presets in the soundbank. For details about using the browser to see the UVI Workstation PDF manual.

The Edit tab and macro controls: The Edit tab displays the Macro controls (knobs and buttons) that let you modify the sound of the preset. The Macro Help section provides tips for using the macro controls for each preset.

The Effects tab: Click the Effects tab to gain access to the effects rack for the preset (as seen below). This gives you more detailed control over the effects being used for the preset. Here, you can add, remove, and modify effects from UVI Workstation's considerable aresenal of effects processors.

Multi view: Multi view allows you to load up to four different presets simultaneously and then assign them to either different MIDI channels (for multi-timbral operation), or the same MIDI channel, where ou can then map them to different regions on your controller to mix and blend them. On-screen keyboard: Use the on-screen keyboard to be able to play the preset using your on-screen cursor.
